The rain poured down in sheets, a relentless cascade of water that seemed to wash away the very soul of the city. I stood under the flickering neon sign that marked the entrance to my apartment, my trench coat soaked through to the bone, and a cigarette clinging to my lips for dear life. It was October 1952, a time when shadows grew longer, and secrets ran deeper than the Hudson River.

One month had passed since the old man kicked the bucket. William Cloque-Overton Sr., my uncle, had finally succumbed to the ravages of time at the ripe age of 89. It wasn't unexpected, but it sent a chill down my spine nonetheless. The family had always been shrouded in mystery, like a fog that refused to lift.

But it wasn't just the old man who had seen better days. His only son, William Cloque-Overton Jr., my cousin, had been carted off to the Arkham Sanatorium for the criminally insane years ago. Rumors of madness and mayhem clung to his name like a bad reputation. I hadn't seen him in years, and I wasn't about to shed a tear for a lost relative.

Then came the letter, delivered by my uncle's attorney, a man by the name of Arthur Howe. The old man's will was to be read at Cloque Manor, that eerie mansion that had stood atop the cliffs since before I was born. Besides me, there were five other nieces and nephews, all of us eligible to inherit the old man's fortune. I couldn't help but think of the mountain of debts that had been crushing me, like a weight that threatened to bury me six feet under.

As I flicked my cigarette into the gutter and watched it sizzle in the rain, I knew that the Cloque-Overton family reunion at the manor would be a powder keg of secrets, lies, and betrayals waiting to explode. And I was damn well going to be there, ready to stake my claim to the inheritance that could change my life forever. But first I had to navigate the treacherous waters of family, where blood is thicker than water and greed stretches longer than the darkest night.
